Devkumar was called to the Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn, England in October 2000, admitted as an Advocate & Solicitor in Malaysia in August 2001 and is a Managing Partner in Kumar & Co with 24 years of experience.

Devkumar specializes in the area of Criminal Law, Civil, Corporate, Personal Injury Litigation, Bankruptcy and Banking Litigation and Insurance Law. In addition, he advises on areas of Legal Tech, Cyber Security, Data Protection, Artificial Intelligence and all legal aspects of the Tech Industry. He is currently involved in the ongoing implementation of Online Court Proceedings and Trials within the Malaysian Legal System.

He was the Secretary of the Penang Bar Committee from 2007-2008 and 2009-2013 and was Chairman of the Welfare and Pupil Affairs Sub-committee. He was the Chairman of the Continuing Professional Development Committee in the Penang Bar from 2019-2023, Chairman of the Legaltech Committee 2021-2023 and a member of the Criminal Law Committee of the Bar Council from 2009-2013 and from 2019-2023. He is also a certified Advocacy Trainer under the Bar Council since 2016 and has been training pupils and lawyers in all aspects of trials and appeals in the area of Criminal and Civil Litigation throughout Malaysia. Devkumar is also now the Penang Bar Representative to the Bar Council 2025-2026.

Mr Devkumar has been involved in several high-profile trials in the last 24 years, most notably defending:

  • An anaesthetist who was charged for the murder of the then Deputy Minister’s son-in-law whilst undergoing a dental procedure in KL in 2017;
  • A fisherman for the murder by shooting of two men in 2003;
  • A gynaecologist in Kuantan, Pahang, (the first medical practitioner in Malaysia to be criminally charged for the death of patient as a result of an abortion) in 2004;
  • An IT Degree holder for the gruesome murder of an American woman in Sungai Siput in 2003;
  • A mother of two who was charged for the attempted suicide of herself and two children in 2005;
  • A 58 year old man for the murder of his wife and two daughters by arson in Batu Gajah in 2010;
  • A sole proprietor who was charged for murder of his neighbour vendor whom was later diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder II in 2014;
  • A young self-employed man who was involved in a bar fight gone wrong which led to the brutal stabbing of a student in 2012 and a 63 year old grandmother for the attempted murder and assault of her daughter in law by way of scalding and stabbing who was diagnosed with schizoid-affective disorder in 2015. All of the above clients, to name a few, were acquitted and released.
